The highest and longest trestle on the trip spans S.O.B. Canyon, the bottom of which lies nearly 150 feet below. Building this bridge was an engineering feat accomplished by only men and mules. Even though tall tales grow taller about the name of the bridge, S.O.B. simply stands for “Superintendent of Bridges.”
Sycamore Canyon, often referred to as “Little Grand Canyon,” is 25 miles of wilderness adjacent to the Verde Canyon, and enjoyed by passengers as they pass the entrance to this pristine slice of Arizona.
The Verde Canyon, often referred to as “Arizona’s Other Grand Canyon,” unfolds with spectacular and colorful geology, including a monocline fold. The naturally chiseled rock formations named after their likenesses – elephant rock, Whistler’s Mother, Budweiser frogs and Dave’s guardian angel – entertain passengers thirsty for whimsy. “Turtle Rock,” with his head, shell and little turtle tail, is remembered by passengers traveling the Canyon in the 1920s to have had the same namesake.
"Fantastic! Awesome! A rare opportunity to see the natural beauty of the geology and topography of the best Arizona has to offer"
