The original smelter site covered over 200 acres with more than 30 buildings and 13 miles of standard gauge rail.
It operated from about 1914 to the end of 1953 when both the Jerome mines and smelter finally closed their doors forever.
In 1962, the final 400-foot high stack was blown, signaling the end of an era and an industry on which a community had been built and prospered.
"The staff of the VCRR really is unique. I could sense a very pleasant atmosphere the moment I walked on the property."
