This distinctive confluence of high desert and wetland is populated by a variety of wildlife and waterfowl which thrive among the indigenous foliage along the river. This isolated wonderland beckons one to relax and enjoy the journey.

The ribbons of green vegetation that grow along the banks of the Verde River provide critical habitat for the Canyon’s waterfowl, including the Great Blue Heron. While cruising the river, these graceful birds glide on a wingspan that can reach close to six feet.

There are over 74 different species of waterfowl, fish, frogs, insects and mammals that depend on the Verde River for survival. Many birds of prey, including Great Horned Owls, Cooper’s hawks, Peregrine falcons, and red-tail and black hawks are seen along the rails through the Canyon.

Seeing wildlife in their natural environment is truly a feast for the eyes. Mule deer, antelope and Javelina, also known as collared peccary, are usually visible. Occasionally, a fox or coyote may be seen, and sometimes, mountain lions and elk have been spotted.

"My eight-year-old grandson Matthew loved the train ride. Bill was very good to tell him what was coming up and to be on the look out. I’m sure Bill remembers him; he was the little red-headed boy asking all the questions".
