July 4th Celebration & Train Tour near Sedona
On Tuesday, July 4 Verde Canyon Railroad will celebrate Independence Day with their annual Firecracker Express which begins with a traditional all-American barbecue and patriotic music in the depot’s shaded courtyard.
Holidays make a rail adventure extra special. In the Sedona area it’s well known that the historic small town of Clarkdale is the best place to celebrate Independence Day. Families will enjoy the town’s old-fashioned morning parade and park festivities followed by a ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad’s Firecracker Express in the afternoon.
Festooned in stars and stripes and filled with rousing patriotic anthems, the Verde Canyon Railroad depot is site of a festive All-American barbecue luncheon, served on the shaded depot patio prior to the train’s 1:00pm departure. The classic 4th of July holiday menu features grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, baked beans, special recipe potato salad, cupcakes and ice-cold lemonade.
On rails laid in 1912, Verde Canyon Railroad has operated as a scenic wilderness excursion since 1990 and celebrates having carried over two million passengers through this wilderness wonderland. The train’s vintage FP7 locomotives are both dressed proudly in eagle livery, the national bird’s visage leading the train’s way through the winding, wild and scenic canyon.
Visible from the train is an America hewn rough from stone and precious metal, muscle and sweat; an America of wide open wilderness and big blue sky; an America that was built to last. Riding these heritage rails along this rare and scenic riparian area, passengers find themselves transported back to an earlier time in our great nation’s illustrious history; a simpler time, full of freedom and beauty.
