FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From Coast Guard to Canyon Rails: Chris Roach Named General Manager and Roadmaster of Verde Canyon Railroad

Clarkdale, Arizona — [March 10, 2026] — After seven years safeguarding the rails through Arizona’s spectacular Verde Canyon, longtime Roadmaster Chris Roach has been named General Manager of Verde Canyon Railroad and Roadmaster of Clarkdale Arizona Central Railroad. A career railroader with more than two decades of experience maintaining and building rail infrastructure across the country, Roach now takes the helm of daily operations while continuing to oversee the safety of the historic rail line he knows mile by mile.

Roach has served as Roadmaster at Verde Canyon Railroad since 2018, leading the railroad’s Maintenance-of-Way team responsible for inspecting and maintaining the 38-mile track through the rugged Verde Canyon, including the route from Clarkdale to Perkinsville for the excursion line and the route from Clarkdale to Drake for freight operations. His team ensures the integrity of the railroad’s track, bridges, and infrastructure that also support year-round scenic excursions. In his expanded role as General Manager, Roach will guide overall railroad operations while continuing to lead the maintenance efforts that keep the historic line running safely and smoothly.

“Chris brings deep railroad knowledge, steady leadership, and a genuine passion for the Canyon,” said Linda Durbano, Owner. “He understands every inch of track, every bridge, and every responsibility that comes with operating a railroad safely while delivering an unforgettable experience for our passengers.”

Roach’s career in railroading spans more than two decades. Before joining Verde Canyon Railroad, Roach served four years as Roadmaster of Construction for Kansas City Southern Railroad after spending 12 years with the company managing track infrastructure and large-scale maintenance projects. Earlier in his career, Roach worked in track inspection for Union Pacific Railroad for five years, building a foundation in rail safety and operational excellence.

Before entering the railroad industry, Roach served 10 years in the United States Coast Guard, where he developed the discipline and leadership that continue to shape his work today. He has also worked as a farrier, shoeing horses, a trade that instilled the hands-on work ethic he still carries into his role maintaining the rails.

Known for his passionate and approachable leadership style, Roach prioritizes both safety and the customer experience—two values that align closely with Verde Canyon Railroad’s mission.

“I love this Canyon and the responsibility that comes with running trains through it,” said Roach. “Our job is to make sure every passenger enjoys a safe, memorable journey while protecting the railroad and the incredible landscape it passes through.”

Roach’s deep knowledge of rail infrastructure and his commitment to maintaining the historic rail line ensure that Verde Canyon Railroad will continue to deliver the scenic experiences that have made it one of Arizona’s premier attractions.
